First, it helped first-time authors produce books on demand, making it easier to publish, even if the big publishing houses weren’t interested in unproven writers.
 
Many authors found, however, that they could publish their books but they still had to get them sold and relied on word-of-mouth, friends and friendly reviews to get the word out. Some even resorted to selling books out of the trunk of their cars.
